This is the GB2RS News for the week commencing Sunday the 22nd June.
The latest news about the RSGB Morse Test Service.
There are now 9 counties and 3 Scottish regions in which tests
can be taken. The counties are :-
Cornwall
Dorset
Leicestershire
Lincolnshire
Merseyside
Mid-Glamorgan
Northamptonshire
Somerset
Glamorgan
The three Scottish regions are :-
Grampian
Highland
Strathclyde
A list of dates and times of Morse tests in these counties and of
course the locations of the test centres, is available from RSGB
Headquarters.
Morse tests will also be available by about mid-July in the
following counties :-
Avon
Berkshire
Cambridgeshire
Derbyshire
Essex
Guernsey
Gwynedd
Lancashire
Nottinghamshire
Staffordshire
West Midlands
For a full list of when and where Morse tests can be taken,
write to RSGB headquarters, marking your envelope "Morse tests (BR)".
DTI announced last Wednesday that a Morse test pass will now be
valid for life. This is a change from the previous policy, where a
break of over 12 months in licence validity had occurred, or where a
licence had not been obtained within 12 months of passing a Morse
test, the DTI's policy had been that competence in Morse should be
re-tested.
This change brings the currency of the Morse test into line with
that of the Radio Amateur's Examination, and should be of
considerable benefit to radio amateurs. The change has taken place
after consultation with the RSGB. The amateur licence application
form and any relevant DTI publications will be updated as soon as
possible.
SOLAR FACTUAL DATA
------------------
The period between the 9th and the 16th of June was quiet and
there was almost no change in solar or ionospheric parameters. The
sunspot count remained at zero throughout the period - as was
expected - and it has now been at zero since the 2nd of June. Solar
flux levels were virtually static at 68 units, which represents a
small overall decline. The geomagnetic A index averaged a quiet level
of 9 units but an unsettled level of 14 units was recorded on the
10th. The Inda index for the period between the 2nd and the 8th of
June was quiet. Particle input from the solar wind was negligible.
IONOSPHERIC DATA (ENGLAND & WALES)
----------------------------------
Daytime F2 critical frequencies are continuing to fall and
darkness hour levels are rising. This is partly because of seasonal
changes and partly the decline of the sunspot cycle. The daily highs
averaged 5.5 MHz.; they varied between a low of 4.9 MHz. on the 10th
and a high of 6.3 MHz. Even though levels are still declining, they
are still higher than the low point of last May. Sporadic E was
reported on occasional days.
The darkness hour lows average 3MHz., although the 9th was down
to 2.6 MHz. and the 14th up to 3.6 MHz. In general terms, levels are
at present similar to those of this time last year.
SOLAR FORECAST
--------------
Solar activity is expected to remain very low. The geomagnetic
field is expected to be quiet until about the 27th, but unsettled
conditions could occur after then. The 24th and 25th look good for
possible sporadic E. Daytime ionospheric F2 critical frequencies are
expected to increase towards the end of the week and they may be at
their highest on the 26th.
There have been some good sporadic E openings on 50MHz. Both
CT1WW and ZB2BL have been good signals in the south of England for
long periods at a time and many British stations are reported to have
had contacts with them. However, the 144MHz sporadic E season has
been very poor so far, with only a few limited openings.
MORE NEWS
---------
It appears two countries are shortly to adopt a CEPT common
licence for radio amateurs. The details were not clear as this
bulletin was being prepared but both West Germany and Austria appear
to be about to adopt the CEPT recommendations. This means that a
reciprocal licence will no longer be required for operating in these
countries. Radio amateurs considering operation in West Germany or
Austria should contact RSGB HQ for latest info.
As soon as RSGB has more info on the CEPT licence it will
publish it through the usual channels.
The Longleat mobile rally run by the Bristol RSGB group takes
place next Sunday, the 29th June, at Longleat park, Warminster. The
rally will feature all usual attractions, including representatives
from many amateur radio groups, a book stall, displays and
attractions for all the family. Camping and caravan sites are
available and talk-in to the event will be provided on S22 and SU8 by
GB4LMR. Further info from Brian, G4FRG, on 0272-848140.
The AMSAT-UK colloquium takes place on Saturday and Sunday the
5th & 6th July at the University of Surrey in Guildford. Ron
Broadbent, G3AAJ has asked us to point out that there is no more
overnight accommodation available. Anyone wishing to visit the event
on a daily basis may do so by booking with AMSAT before the 30th
June. However, if the all-in meals and lectures plan is required,
bookings must be made with Ron by 12 noon Monday 23rd June on
01-989-6741. It must be stressed that there will be no entry to the
colloquium without prior booking. AMSAT-UK's address is simply
AMSAT-UK, London E12 5EQ.
The White Rose Amateur Radio Society 10 metre activity day takes
place next Sunday, 29th June. The period will be for 8 hours,
starting at 0900 GMT. All amateurs and SWLs are asked to participate
and the results will be monitored by the RSGB's propagation studies
committee who are looking at propagation effects during the sunspot
minimum.
Some important changes to the rules of 2 contests...
Firstly, the 144MHz low power and SWL contest rules published on
page 437 of June's RadCom: power limit for this contest is 25W PEP,
measured at the TX.
Secondly, the 432 MHz low power and SWL contest rules published
on page 437 of June's RadCom: power limit for this contest is 10W
PEP, measured at the TX.
Special event stations this week include:-
GB4WSG - from 27th June to 29th June to mark the 75th anniversary of
scouting in Ware and district. The station will be run by the
Cheshunt and district club.
GB4CC - on 28th June from Crick Castle in Clwyd. The station will be
run by the Oswestry club and will be active on HF, VHF, and possibly
UHF.
GB4PP - on 28th June in the parish of Paignton, Devon. The station
will be run by the Torbay amateur radio society.
GB2CS - on 29th June for the Sleaford carnival. The station will be
run by the Sleaford amateur radio society.
And lastly - though not a special event station, more a rare
location, the Isle of Man amateur radio society will be active on
28th & 29th June from Peel castle, St. Patrick's isle, Peel, using
the callsign GD4IOM. The station will be in WAB square SC28 and will
qualify as a separate island for the WAB offshore islands award.
However, GD4IOM will be active on the HF bands only as there are some
restrictions on the antennas that can be used on the isle which is
owned by the National Trust. The station will operate from about 10
am on Saturday to about 6 pm on Sunday.
The Post Office has informed the RSGB that the latest callsigns
issued as of Wednesday 18th June were in the G0FE and G1TT series.
